McKinley Advisors’ 2025 Annual Survey offers a clear view of the forces reshaping associations today. Across sectors, leaders report that AI, economic pressure, political volatility and shrinking talent pools are reshaping their industries and redefining what members need. These shifts are already affecting associations in significant ways, and associations are looking for clarity as they plan for the future.
Respondents told us the outlook for their industries has weakened. Many expressed concern that without action, their organizations could lose relevance or stability. Boards are discussing disruption and financial resilience more often, and staff teams are modernizing technology, adapting membership models and rethinking their association’s value proposition. In short, this year’s survey highlights a period of significant transition for associations. Associations that understand these trends now will be better positioned to make decisions that shape their success over the next 10 years and beyond.
About the Survey
McKinley surveyed more than 120 association executives in fall 2025, gathering perspectives from CEOs and senior leaders across trade, professional and hybrid organizations. Five themes emerged across industries:
AI Is Redefining Value and Accelerating Change
Executives expect rapid AI adoption to reshape how professionals work and how associations deliver education, guidance and community. Many see both opportunity and risk as AI challenges traditional revenue sources, disrupts workforce needs and raises expectations for speed and personalization. Associations that experiment early and help members navigate these shifts should be in pole position to lead.
Economic Strain Is Pushing Associations to Rethink Their Models
Financial pressures remain constant. Respondents cited rising costs, budget cuts and lower willingness to pay as major threats to long-term stability. Many expect declines in federal funding and continued volatility in their industries. As a result, leaders are reassessing pricing, expanding non-dues revenue and exploring business model changes. The organizations that adapt now will be more resilient when conditions tighten.
Political and Regulatory Uncertainty Is Reshaping Industries
From healthcare to scientific research to education, respondents said policy and regulatory changes are creating instability across their sectors. As a result, many fear reduced funding, shrinking workforce pipelines and declining participation in conferences and research. In moments of uncertainty like this, associations play a vital role by providing clear communication, strong advocacy and scenario planning to help members navigate a rapidly shifting environment.
Workforce Shortages Continue to Deepen
Talent is a growing concern across almost every sector we surveyed. Leaders cited aging workforces, fewer early career entrants and gaps driven by automation. Many expressed concerns that their fields could face long-term shortages without coordinated action. Associations can play a critical role in strengthening career pathways, building partnerships with education providers and promoting their professions to the next generation.
Education and Training Must Evolve to Keep Pace
Expectations for learning and education are shifting as technology advances. Respondents questioned the sustainability of traditional models and emphasized the need for training that reflects new tools and emerging skills. Associations will need to blend virtual and in-person formats, integrate AI into curricula and deliver more tailored experiences.
The challenges facing associations are significant, but so are the opportunities.
Leaders who understand these trends and act decisively will guide their organizations through disruption and build a stronger foundation for the years ahead.
