Lead With Your Strengths

Every association manager and leader has a distinct set of natural talents, and those talents shape everything: how you make decisions, how you communicate, how your team experiences working with you.

Through McKinley Advisors' Strengths-Based Leadership Coaching, you'll work one-on-one with an association coach who has completed all requirements for Gallup Global Strengths Coach certification. You'll complete the CliftonStrengths® assessment, receive a personalized report built on your top 10 strengths and work with your coach to translate those insights into how you lead.

Whether you're stepping into your first supervisory role, leading a new initiative/team or exploring your career path, coaching helps you discover where your strengths are serving you, where you may need to adjust, and how you can derive the most joy and impact from your work.

Why It Matters

Employees who understand and apply their strengths are significantly more engaged, more productive and more likely to report a genuinely better quality of life, both on the job and off it. The organizations around them benefit too, seeing stronger team performance and profitability as a result.

6 x more likely to be engaged in their jobs
8.9 % greater team profitability.
3 x more likely to report an excellent quality of life.

What You'll Gain

You'll leave coaching with a clear, honest picture of how you lead and a practical plan for leading more effectively.

A Complete Picture of How You Lead

Your personalized report analyzes how your top 10 strengths work together, not in isolation. You'll see your natural advantage as a manager or leader, described in language specific to your one-in-33-million profile.

Clarity Through Role Transitions

As you move from individual contributor to supervisor to team or organizational leader, how your strengths show up changes, too. Coaching helps you lean on your strengths through each transition, spot areas of misalignment and identify where you'll maximize your success.

Strategic, Situational Action Steps

Each session translates insight into action. You'll connect your strengths to your role, the leadership challenges you're actually facing, and leave with concrete next steps.

How It Works

Choose Your Report and Take the Assessment. Select the Managers or Leaders report, then complete the CliftonStrengths® assessment with your personalized code. Your role-based report reveals your top 10 strengths and how they shape the way you manage or lead.

Explore Your Leadership Profile. Your coach guides you through your natural advantage as a leader, how your themes interact and what your team experiences because of you.

Apply Your Strengths. You'll connect your strengths to your role and team context, navigate real leadership challenges and build a plan and roadmap for the leader you want to become.

What Makes This Coaching Different

George helped me move beyond simply knowing my CliftonStrengths® to understanding how to apply them in practical ways. His thoughtful questions, active listening, and insightful feedback gave me greater clarity and renewed confidence in how I can lead today and in future roles. It was engaging, productive and genuinely enjoyable.

Kate Dockins, MS, CAE

Executive Director, American Student Dental Association

George Miller brings more than 25 years of experience working and consulting with mission-driven organizations, including 20 years in leadership roles in the association and higher education fields before joining McKinley. As a practice director on McKinley's Organizational Excellence team, he has partnered on projects with over 90 association clients, from strategic planning and board development to specialized emerging leader training programs.

George has delivered strengths-based coaching in both individual and group settings, helping professionals understand where they are, where they want to go and the types of roles and environments where they'll maximize their success. In 2025, Association Forum honored him with the John C. Thiel Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to the association community.

George's own CliftonStrengths® shape how he shows up in every session:

Maximizer | Communication | Harmony | Consistency | Analytical

His Maximizer and Analytical themes drive him to connect the dots across your profile and amplify your strengths where they'll have the biggest leadership impact, while his Communication helps you find precise language for talents you've always had but never quite named. Harmony and Consistency round out his approach: coaching that navigates the interpersonal dynamics where your strengths meet others' and follows a clear arc from insight to action, with some humor along the way.

Questions We Get Asked

What is CliftonStrengths®?

CliftonStrengths® is Gallup's research-backed assessment that identifies your natural talents across 34 themes. More than 30 million people have taken it. Rather than focusing on what's wrong, it reveals what's right, giving you a foundation for developing as a leader in a way that's true to who you are.

How do I choose between the Managers and Leaders reports?

Both are personalized reports built on your top 10 strengths, so the choice comes down to the leadership questions you want to answer.

If your focus is the people you manage, how you onboard, engage and develop your team, choose CliftonStrengths® for Managers.

If your focus is organizational direction, how you guide others, make decisions and set strategy, choose CliftonStrengths® for Leaders.

You make the call, and if you're on the fence, your coach is happy to talk it through before you begin.

I'm not in a formal leadership role yet. Is this for me?

Yes. If you're preparing for a management or leadership role, coaching helps you understand how your strengths will influence the way you show up for a team before you're in that position, so you step in with self-awareness rather than building it on the fly.

What happens in a coaching session?

Each virtual 50-minute session is a focused one-on-one conversation with your coach. You'll explore your report, connect your strengths to real situations in your role and leave with situational action steps. Sessions build on each other over two to three months.

What if I've already taken CliftonStrengths® for Managers or Leaders?

No retake required if the report is as recent as June 2026. Simply supply the report to your coach, and schedule your first session to explore how you manage or lead.

If you have a different report, like your Top 5 or All 34, we'll provide a code for the Managers or Leaders report of your choice. You'll redeem it in your existing Gallup account and the new report is generated instantly from your original results, unless you prefer to take the assessment again. Even if you only know your Top 5, the role-based report reveals your 10 most dominant themes.

Should I take the CliftonStrengths® assessment again?

While an individual’s Strengths profile is unlikely to shift dramatically over their career, we recommend taking the assessment again if you have experienced a significant life (e.g becoming a parent) or professional (e.g. new role) change in the past few years, or if it has been more than seven years since you’ve taken the assessment.

Are coaching conversations confidential?

Yes. Individual coaching conversations are confidential between the coach and the participant. McKinley will not share the content of coaching discussions, personal reflections, or specific action plans with the sponsoring organization (if applicable) without the participant's permission. When coaching is sponsored by an employer, we may provide high-level updates such as participation, progress toward the coaching objectives, or common themes across multiple participants.

What information will the sponsoring organization receive?

Unless otherwise agreed upon, the sponsoring organization will receive only high-level updates, such as coaching participation, overall progress, or aggregated themes that may inform organizational development. Individual conversations and personal coaching goals remain confidential.

Can my whole team or board do this?

This offering focuses on individual coaching. If you're interested in strengths-based development for your team, leadership group or board, contact us to discuss a customized approach.
