McKinley Advisors Names Tim Hopkins as Managing Director
Washington, D.C. — Tim Hopkins, CAE, has been appointed as McKinley Advisors’ Managing Director, a newly created role that will expand the firm’s strategic leadership and capabilities. Hopkins will join McKinley’s Senior Leadership Team and play a crucial role in shaping the company's future direction and implementing innovative solutions to address the most pressing needs of association leaders.
"This is an incredible day for McKinley. Anyone who knows Tim will speak to his amazing depth of character, his razor-sharp intellect, and the deep, deep love he has for the association profession. His driving motivation is to make an impact for the associations he advises so they can change the world, and I can't wait to be a witness to all the impact he will be able to deliver in this new role. We couldn't be happier for Tim," said Jay Younger, FASAE, President and CEO of McKinley Advisors.
Hopkins has 20 years of experience leading initiatives that transform mission-driven organizations. As a Practice Director at McKinley, he has pioneered the firm’s work in strategy execution, delivered positive outcomes for complex projects, facilitated dozens of impactful board strategy retreats, and developed unique new frameworks that have meaningfully advanced associations’ performance in diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) and organizational effectiveness. Hopkins has partnered with clients ranging from small to large organizations, including various trade and professional societies. He has also chaired the firm’s internal Diversity Committee and served as a mentor to its many emerging leaders.
Prior to joining McKinley in 2020, Tim led digital strategy for nearly 16 years at trade and professional societies. Most recently, he served at the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) for nearly eight years as director of the IAFC Digital Center, the centralized hub for cross-collaborative internal and external digital initiatives that led product development, data analytics, social media and strategic technology investments. His work at IAFC helped improve the day-to-day lives of first responders, including work supporting disaster response, cross-state resourcing, and making dense research actionable for departments across the globe. He also served as staff liaison to numerous committees and councils and led IAFC’s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, including the creation of the IAFC Diversity Executive Leadership Program (iDELP), an initiative elevating underrepresented and historically marginalized leaders in fire and emergency services.
Hopkins is highly engaged in the association community and known as an innovator and thought leader. He has presented and facilitated sessions and contributed to articles for ASAE, Association Forum and other organizations. He is the Chair of the ASAE Diversity + Inclusion Committee (2023-2025), a member of the ASAE Power of A Oversight Committee, and previously served on the ASAE Technology Professionals Advisory Council and numerous conference proposal review committees and task forces.
“I am hyper-focused on helping associations manage complexities to reach their greatest potential,” Hopkins said. “Being entrusted in this newly created leadership role on our senior leadership team by my colleagues means the world to me. The culture at McKinley, our standard of excellence for our work, and our approach to association partnerships are unlike anything I’ve experienced before, in the best of ways. I’m excited to add my broad range of experience and expertise to help shape the future direction of our organization, including how we leverage innovative technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), to maximize the impact we can help associations have on people and the planet.”
